Guide and Virtual Tour of Whitby: Bridge Street bridge.
Panorama | Review | Map
Whitby harbour is situated at the mouth of the River Esk, with a total area of about 80 acres. The arms of the entrance piers extend out to sea in a northerly direction leaving the entrance exposed to strong winds from north west through north to north east and sheltered from other directions.
Whitby is divided into an East Bank and West Bank, connected by a swing bridge. The current bridge was constructed in 1908, but the original bridge was known to exist as far back as 1351!
The bridge spans 75ft and each section can be operated independently swinging horizontally.
Whitby swing bridge is manned for two hours either side of high water and works strictly to the tide tables produced by the Whitby Harbour Office.
